ORGANIZATION DESCRIPTION
Led by Artistic Director Stuart Carden and Executive Director Angela Gieras, Kansas City Repertory Theatre is a 60-year-old regional theater. KCRep is the professional theatre in residence on the UMKC campus. Spencer Theatre, a 550-seat modified thrust theatre, is housed in the Olson Performing Arts Center. Copaken Stage is our 319-seat LORT D space, which is housed in the H&R Block world headquarters in downtown KC. The subscription season currently consists of four productions as well as the annual special presentation of A Christmas Carol and an annual community tour in the spring.

JOB OVERVIEW
The Carpenter is responsible for the construction, installation (load-in), and strike of all scenery for KCRep productions, utilizing a variety of methods and materials. This role requires technical skills, the ability to interpret design and technical drawings, and a commitment to safety and quality craftsmanship. The Carpenter will work both independently and collaboratively within the scenic department.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Construct, maintain, move, and set up scenery and related items as assigned.
  • Build from both design and technical drawings.
  • Participate in all builds, strikes, and load-ins for each production.
  • Report to the Technical Director/Assistant Technical Director/Lead Carpenter for job assignments.
  • Assist in the transportation of scenery to other spaces.
  • Communicate with the Lead Carpenter, Materials Coordinator, or shop foreman regarding equipment issues, inventory, and supplies.
  • Use and request proper safety equipment for job assignments.
  • Assist in the general maintenance of the scene shop and its equipment.
  • Keep supervisors informed of the status of builds.
  • Adhere to the theatre’s safety policies.
  • Undertake other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Knowledge of traditional scenic construction techniques, metalworking, welding, framing and finish carpentry, rigging standards and techniques, and sewing and stretching soft goods, basic painting, and paint prep.
  • Problem-solving skills and creative thinking for addressing challenges.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings.
  • Proficiency in theatrical construction techniques.
  • Knowledge and proficiency in various scenic construction methods.
  • Familiarity with safety equipment and products.
  • Understanding of the artistic process and strong interpersonal, teamwork, and diplomacy skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, rapidly changing environment.
